Tioga Recreation Area
E-Bike Rules
In accordance with Minnesota State Statutes and rules as well as the DNR lease agreement for the Tioga Recreation Area, Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric-assisted bicycles are permitted on these trails. Note: State law prohibits anyone under the age of 15 from operating any electric-assisted bicycle.
Minnesota’s definition of electronic bicycles per MN Statute 169.011 Subdivision 27 include:
2 or 3 wheels
A saddle and fully operable pedals for human propulsion
Equipped with an electric motor that has a power output of not more than 750 watts
Meets the requirements of a Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, or multiple mode electric-assisted bicycle
E-Bike Classifications:
Class 1
An electric-assisted bicycle with a motor that provides assistance only while the rider is pedaling, and stops assisting once the bicycle reaches 20 mph.
Class 2
An electric-assisted bicycle with a motor that can propel the bike without pedaling, but stops assisting once the bicycle reaches 20 mph.
Class 3
An electric-assisted bicycle with a motor that provides assistance only while the rider is pedaling, and stops assisting once the bicycle reaches 28 mph.
Motorized bicycles that do not meet the definition of a Class 1, 2, or 3 electric-assisted bicycle are not allowed on Tioga Recreation Area trails. This includes e-bikes without pedals, such as Sur-ron and similar models.
